趣旨 about

The Aim of the Hiroshima Peace Art Exhibition

Wars have always destroyed cultures. If a nuclear war were to break out, humanity could face extinction. Since art is essential to the human spirit, we choose to cherish art and reject war. We oppose all policies, actions, preparations, and experiments that might lead to war. As people living in Hiroshima, this is our shared and sincere desire. To express our longing for peace through art, we gather around August 6th each year. We hold a comprehensive art exhibition to promote and realize lasting world peace.

Message from the Chairman

Since the atomic bombs were dropped on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the devil of nuclear weapons has grown immense, expanding its threat to the very existence of humanity. We are now forced to live under the constant fear of this devil awakening. Though it may appear to sleep, it continues to erode the human heart, waiting for the chance to rise again.

In today’s world of deepening chaos—where the spirit of philanthropy is fading and violence and destruction persist—the Doomsday Clock shows only 89 seconds remaining until humanity's extinction. Our desire to abolish nuclear weapons and realize lasting world peace may seem distant. Yet, in the midst of this grim reality, Japan Hidankyo receiving the Nobel Peace Prize has given us renewed hope and courage. The steady, unyielding efforts of those who long for true peace have shown that it is possible to stand against the overwhelming threat of nuclear weapons.

The Hiroshima Peace Art Exhibition is not a place for competition or a display of artistic superiority. It is a space where anyone who shares the mission of the exhibition can participate. Each artwork is a living expression of the individual artist. For 71 years, we have continued this exhibition as a platform of mutual respect and diversity. Now, on the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings, we take a new and resolute step forward for peace.

President, Hiroshima Peace Art Exhibition Hiroshi Fukunaga
